iftar

2425 Narrated by Yahya Ibn Yahya (RA) ... Sahl Ibn Sa'd (RA). The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said that as long as people break their fast without delay, they will be on welfare.

Al Musnadus Sahih - Imam Muslim (Sahih Muslim)

Explanation of hadith:

Breaking fast was a characteristic of the Prophets. Sahaba Keram also used to fast Iftar. The Prophet, may God bless him and grant him peace, said.

People will be in the midst of Khair and Kalyan as long as they break the fast as soon as it is time. Sahih Bukhari, Hadith 1957; Sahih Muslim, Hadith 1098

found in other descriptions.

Deen will be established as long as people fast iftar. Because the Jews-Nazarenes delay. Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaiba, Hadith 8944

It has come to Qudsi in the hadith, Allah Ta'ala says.

As soon as it's time, fast iftar is my favorite. Jame' Tirmidhi, Hadith 700; Musnad Ahmad, Hadith 7241, 8360

Once Hazrat Masrook Rah. Two companions asked Hazrat Ayesha. Both are very advanced in welfare work. One starts Iftar and Maghrib fast. Another delayed a bit. Ammajan asked, but who is fast? He said, Abdullah Ibn Masood RA. Hazrat Ayesha said

The Messenger of Allah, may God bless him and grant him peace, used to do the same. Sahih Muslim, Hadith 1099; Jame' Tirmidhi, Hadith 702

So do not fast iftar as soon as it is time.

Iftar before prayer

As soon as the sun sets, the fasting person will break the fast and the muezzin will call the call to prayer. This is not the case after the start of the Iftar Azan.

It is customary in our country that people wait before the Iftar and do not break the Iftar until they hear the call to prayer. From this, the idea has been created in the minds of some people that the time of iftar starts after the call to prayer. This idea is not correct. As soon as the sun sets, it is time for iftar. And delaying Iftar for no reason is Sunnah in the Caliphate. Iftar should be done as soon as it is time.

Fasting briefly before prayer; Iftar doesn't have to be a big event. Such was the time of the Prophet. Hazrat Anas said

The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) used to break his fast with fresh dates before the Maghrib prayer. Use dry dates if fresh dates are not available. And if he didn't have that, he would drink a few sips of water. Sunan Abu Dawud, Hadith 2356; Jame' Tirmidhi, Hadith 696; Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaiba, Hadith 9789

Iftar with dates

We just saw that the Prophet used to break his fast with dates. So it is mustahab to break iftar with dates. If you don't get dates, add water. Prophet said

If one of you breaks his fast, let him break his fast with dates. If dates are not available, add water. Because it is sacred. Jame' Tirmidhi, Hadith 695

Read iftar dua

Hadith Sharif mentions reciting this dua at the time of Iftar:

Oh God! I have fasted for your satisfaction and I have broken my fast with your sustenance. Sunan Abu Dawud, Hadith 2358; Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaiba, Hadith 9744; Book of Juhad, Ibnul Mubarak, Hadith 1410, 1411

Rasulullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam used to recite this dua too

Thirst quenched, veins refreshed. And if Allah wills, the reward of fasting is recorded in the record. Sunan Abu Dawud, Hadith 2357; Sunan Kubra, Nasa'i, Hadith 3315, 10058

694. Muhammad Ibn Rafi (RA) ..... Narrated by Anas Ibn Malik (RA). Rasulullah (ﷺ) used to break his fast with some fresh dates before performing the Maghrib prayer. If he could not find fresh dates, he would break his fast with some dry dates. And if he could not find dry dates, he would drink a few sips of water.

Imam Abu Isa (RA) said, this hadith is Hasan Ghareeb. Imam Abu Isa (RA) also said, It is narrated that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) used to break his fast with dry dates in winter and with water in summer.

Al Jamiul Kabir - Imam Tirmidhi (Jame' Tirmidhi)

Hadith No: 696 International No: 696

Tahqiq: pure (literally authentic)

Narrated by: Anas Ibn Malik (RA) (died: 93 AH)

Hazrat Salman Farsi (R.A.) said, The Holy Prophet (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) said: Whoever breaks his fast in this month, it will be a way of getting his sins forgiven and release from (Hell) fire. And the reward of that fasting will not be less at all. Companions said, O Messenger of Allah! Each of us does not have this ability, by which he will break the fasting person? Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: (This reward does not depend on feeding one's stomach but) this reward will be given by Allah to the person who (according to his ability) feeds the fasting person with a sip of milk or a single date or a drink of water. Will have iftar. Whoever satisfies a fasting person, Allah Ta'ala will make him drink from My House (House of Kawsar) in such a way that he will not be thirsty again before entering Paradise.
