Atonement and redemption

A slave should be set free for not fasting. If that is not possible then one should fast for two months. If that is not possible, sixty poor people have to be fed for two days. This is the expiation of fasting.

The amount of expiation is the fair amount of sadaqa al-fitr, i.e. giving to each of sixty poor people two and a quarter kilograms of wheat or flour or its value. And if sixty fakirs are fed two meals without giving it, then the expiation will be paid.

If a person is unable to fast during the month of Ramadan due to a serious illness – due to which he was unable to keep some of the fasts of Ramadan, but later recovers and is able to make up for those few days, he does not keep them. The bequest must be completed by one-third of his bequest.

Masala: It is permissible not to fast if unable to fast due to old age. In this case, instead of every fast, one will feed a poor person two meals a day or donate two and a half kilos worth of wheat in charity.

Allah says:

وَعَلَى الَّذِينَ يُطِيقُونَهُ فِدْيَةٌ طَعَامُ مِسْكِينٍ

And those who find it very difficult to fast will give food to a poor person. - Surah Baqarah: 184; Almuhitul Burhani 3/361; Fatawa Hindia 1/207

Masala: An old or sick person who cannot afford to fast and who is unlikely to be able to perform Qaza later should pay fidya instead of fast.-Surah Baqarah: 184

Chabet Bunani Rah. said, Anas Ibn Malek RA. When he was not able to fast due to old age, he used to donate food without fasting (fidya).-Musannaf Abdur Raziaq, Hadith: 7570

Ikrima Rah. Said, "My mother was suffering from severe thirst and was not able to fast. About him I asked Taus Rah. He said, "In lieu of every day, one muad (two and a half kilograms as of today) of wheat will be given to the poor." - Musannaf Abdur Razaq, Hadith: 7581

Masala: If it is not possible to fast fast, it is necessary to make a will to give fidya before death. If the heirs pay fidya on behalf of the deceased if no bequest is made, it is hoped that Allah Ta'ala will accept it. However, if the deceased does not make a will, in that case, fidaa will not be paid from the Ijmali property of the heir. If they want to pay privately, the heirs of Baleg can pay from their share.-Raddul Muhtar 2/424-425; Fatawa Hindia 1/207

Masala: It is better to give the fidya of one fast to a poor person. However, even if it is given to more than one person, fidaya will be collected. And it is permissible to give more than one fidayah to a poor person.

Abdullah Ibn Abbas RA. Said, "The old man who is not able to fast should give half a sa' (ie about two and a half kilograms) of wheat to a poor person instead of fasting. - Musannaf Abdur Razaq, Hadith: 7574; Albahrur Rayek 2/87; Addurrul Mukhtar 2/427

# Al Kawsar

The amount of Fediya is equal to the amount of Fitr in charity. In other words, two and a half sers of wheat or its equivalent will be given. However, if a fakir is fed in the morning and afternoon, then Fediya will be paid. It should be noted that this Fediya of the fast must be paid at least after the moon rises in the month of Ramadan. If the Fediya is paid before the moon rises, it will not be paid.
